Smartwatches are dumb, but they don't have to be

If recent trends are any indication, there are two roads that lie ahead forsmartwatches and the companies foisting them upon us: the all-you-can-eat, tracker + smartphone approach and the single-minded focus on health and wellness bands. One meanders off to a fuzzy horizon laden with disregarded Dead End signs, a jumble of features and an overload of quantified-self data. And the other... well, that narrowly focused path to wellness simply falls off a cliff. It's not because dedicated health and wellness devices have no place in the wearables market -- right now, they do. It's because that area of lifestyle tracking will inevitably be consumed by the smartwatch borg as a subset of ancillary features. And yet, here we are -- about to enter into the irrevocable phase of mobile technologies as wrist-worn wearables with questionable (for now) benefits. A future we'll preview more intensely at this year's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona as some big-name manufacturers unveil their in-development takes on what can currently be described as redundant lifestyle tech.

Wearable technology is, without doubt, the biggest and most exciting technology trend at the moment.
In 2013, companies showed us that these devices can actually be used to improve day-to-day life; and 2014 is shaping up to be a landmark year for wearable gadgets.

Wearable gadgets not ready for prime time, tech watchers say

CES(Reuters) - Despite the hoopla, wearable gadgets like wristwatches for checking your text messages or eyeglasses that capture video are unlikely to make a splash with consumers anytime soon, given the clumsy designs, high prices and technological constraints of many of the current offerings.

Supreme Court will hear Aereo on April 22 with one Justice sitting out — Tech News and Analysis

Summary:

We now have a date for the most closely watched court case in the TV and entertainment industry. A recusal increases the chance of a tie (and a win for Aereo).

Aereo antennas
photo: Rani Molla

Aereo is a scrappy start-up service that delivers over-the-air TV to computers and mobile devices for $8/month. But it is also a strategic weapon that media mogul Barry Diller and other well-heeled investors want to use to drive a stake into the heart of the current business model of cable TV, which is based on selling customers large bundles of channels they often don’t want.

Aereo’s future depends on a controversial interpretation of copyright law that received a green light from a New York appeals court, but that the broadcasters want the Supreme Court to declare illegal.

The country’s highest case agreed to hear the appeal in January, and now they’ve set a date. In an argument schedule released on Tuesday, the court said it will hear the case on April 22nd.

The schedule is also notable because Justice Samuel Alito has recused himself from the case, according to ScotusBlog.

Such recusals typically arise because a judge has a financial or other type of conflict of interest. This means that the decision could end in a 4-4 tie – in which case, the lower court decision siding with Aereo will be upheld.
